How renewal works in California
Three-year cycle
Drinking water treatment and distribution certificates are valid for three years. Your contact hours must be earned inside that window and cannot be reused from a previous renewal.
Hours scale with grade
Grade 1 needs 12 contact hours, Grade 2 needs 16, Grade 3 needs 24, and Grades 4 and 5 need 36. Safety topics are capped at 25 percent of the total.
Collections is different
CWEA collection system certificates run on a two-year cycle with 12 contact hours. Do not assume your drinking water schedule applies.
